BUDDY Travelwing Sub Three Zero

The new Travelwing Sub Three Zero is constructed from the same unique lightweight materials sourced to produce the popular Commando Escape travel bcd. That is, a combination of the toughest avaiiable laminated 1000 denier Cordura on the pockets and exterior panels while the wing itself is welded using high spec 800 denier - OceanSeal800 - which is twice as durable as most other bcds on the market, travel or otherwise.

The new wing comes in two sizes: S/M and Large/XL, both of which weigh-in at a flight-friendly sub-3kg.

It comes with integrated weight pouches, which hold up to 5kg of hard or soft lead and are secured with a 25mm buckle and large velcro flap. The inner pouch features the familiar BUDDY chunky grips for easy and secure weight handling. These pockets can be converted to spacious 3 litre cargo pockets as an alternate use if integrated weights are not to your taste.

Also included as standard is the time-proven integrated shoulder dump which dumps air at a slower rate than the other two dump valves, making it ideal for (one-handed) fine-tune buoyancy control. With our usual attention to detail, we have included our innovative, easy-to-locate floating dump valve knob at the lower rear valve. The one at the chest is made from negatively buoyant material, again, for ease of location.

The new wing is extremely comfortable with or without a suit, with very generous padding at shoulders, waist and back. It also features a cummerbund that is size adjustable at front and rear to perfect the fit. The waistband can be tightened with either hand from either side.

The Travelwing offers 14.5kg of lift and features muliple lightweight anodised aluminium D rings (4x50mm prebent rings on the waist and 3x25mm on the shoulders) plus the usual two, very useful, 25mm internal pocket D rings. A hose-retaining clip adds to this hardware offering efficient equipment management.

It has a neat rubber and webbing carry-handle at the rear, a cylinder-retaining strap and a single cylinder camband, which solidly secures all single cylinder sizes up 15 litres.

All-in-all, the new Travelwing is a lightweight package that delivers the high performance, quality and comfort expected of a BUDDY bcd.

Available in 2 sizes - S/M and L/XL [Note: the wing and harness are the same size for both but there are 2 sizes of waist cummerbund]

S/M : fits waist size 84cm to 109cm (33-43") (measured without suit)

L/XL : fits waist size 104cm to 135cm (41-53") (measured without suit)

Max Lift: 14.5kg (140N)

Dry Weight: 2.7kg (S/M), 2.9kg (L/XL)

Integrated Weight Pouches: hold up to 5kg (11lb) solid or shot lead

Stowage Pockets: If the weight pouches are removed and the pockets used for stowage instead, the capacity per pocket is either 1.5 litres each or 3 litres (204mmx18mmx90mm) if folded out to full size (see images)

PLEASE BE AWARE: The APV300 inflator has standard inflate/deflate/oral-inflate functions BUT DOES NOT have the emergency jacket-breathing valve function of the other two A.P. Valves. Therefore, you will not be able to use this valve for this emergency routine as described in the APV200 and APV100 sections of this site.

There is no facility for an emergency mini-cylinder option on the Travelwing. Therefore, if you choose the Auto Air option, the emergency jacket-breathing function of the Auto Air does not apply. However, the spare-air octopus regulator function of the Auto Air will operate as normal.

Reviews

The Travelwing is currently under test with all major UK magazines.

"The Travelwing is manufactured from the same materials as the iconic BUDDY Commando...

If you don't use the weight integratation then the pouch holders can be opened up to serve instead as two gigantic pockets - it's all very clever.

The shoulders and backpack are generously padded, making it quite comfortable when wearing a thinner wetsuit...

While I was overseas, the Travelwing received several admiring glances and people on the boat were interested to see how I got on with it. The short answer is that it performed flawlessly.

It's evident that A.P.Valves has designed the jacket from the bottom up rather than following a formulaic 'standard' and produced exactly what you would expect from a travel wing...

It's not cheap but it will probably last you a lifetime if it's anything like the other BCs carrying the BUDDY tag.
